BACKGROUND

The fundamental purpose of the workshop, which was designed for Slovenian experts, stakeholders, local policy makers and academics concerning Earth Observations, was to inform the audience on the latest developments regarding International and Slovenian Earth Observation activities. In the morning session the first two keynote speakers, Herbert Haubold, PhD, from Environment Agency Austria, and Silvo Žlebir, PhD, from Slovenian Environment Agency, addressed issues related to GEO, GEOSS and GMES activities. Next speakers held presentations on EO developments and applications, national EO data and policies which might have an impact on the environment.

The afternoon round table, which was led by Krištof Oštir, PhD, from Slovenian Centre of Excellence - SPACE-SI, was opened by Vojko Bratina, PhD, with the presentation on EC strategy towards GEO and GMES. Participants of the round table discussion also included representatives from Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Jožef Stefan Institute, Geological Survey of Slovenia, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning and Surveying and Mapping Authority. Invited guests and the audience discussed present opportunities and future challenges regarding EO data and financing of the European programmes. This was a good opportunity for participants to discuss perspectives, and share experiences and best practices in an open debate. The workshop concluded with an important statement that in Slovenia a common GEO and GMES forum for networking and application exchange is needed.
